Controlling Mosquitoes Begins with Larval Control
One of the first steps in managing mosquitoes is to get rid of larval habitats; these are ditches, deep tire tracks, any standing water in hubcaps, old tires, tin cans, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools and low lying areas on the property, anything that can hold water for more than a few days. Don’t allow any water to accumulate in cemetery urns or pet dishes for more than 2 days.

Clean debris out of rain gutters and remove water from around or under structures and off of flat roofs.

Change water in wading pools and birdbaths a minimum of once per week. Another thing that can be done is to stock ornamental pools with predatory fish called top feeding predatory minnows, also known as mosquito fish. They’re about 1 to 1 ½ inches long and can be net caught in local streams or bought. Mosquito Bits, Pre-Strike Mosquito Torpedo and Mosquito Dunks can also be purchased at garden stores or the local hardware.

Ditches, swampy areas and drain puddles need to be drained and tree holes and stumps need to be filled with mortar. Also, seepage from cess pools , septic tanks and cisterns need to be eliminated. Animal water troughs need to be changed twice per week. Make sure that there is no standing water in canvas or plastic covers used for pools, boats, ATVs , etc. Drape your covers so that they do not hold any standing water. Any construction sites should be back filled and graded so that proper drainage occurs.

Make sure gardens and lawns are irrigated so that water does not stand for more than a day or so. Any stagnant water in ditches on public land should be reported to local authorities or the Mosquito Control or Public Health department.

There is now available another method of larval control called LarvaSonic, an acoustic larvicide device. It works by transmitting sound into the water at a certain frequency (resonant frequency) that can rupture larval tissue and cause death.

Make sure to follow the above suggestions before summer and warmer weather sets in, and then put in place adult mosquito control devices and make sure to use personal repellent devices such as the following. Click on product to see info and ordering page:
